The decision used to be very straight forward for parents when it came to choosing a baby monitor, but it's not so easy anymore. If you were to look back to even just 10 years ago, you would probably find only a few choices for baby monitors which only offered a few features, but these days baby monitors can practically do just about anything (except changing your baby's diaper of course)! Perhaps you only need a monitor which can transmit sounds, or maybe you want something more complex that can record both audio and visual surveillance, but either way, all you have to do is use these tips as a guide when choosing your next baby monitor.

First, you'll probably want to control the volume on your receiver. Of course you'll want to hear any sound of distress, but try to find a monitor that allows you to adjust volume to a comfortable level. No mother, or father, wants to wake up to the sound of a car horn blaring in the bedroom, then you check things out and your baby is rattling some toy. You want to find a system that will transmit the sounds you want to hear at a volume that is good for your ears.

Choose your frequency carefully. Many inexpensive baby monitors will operate at a 49MHz frequency. That frequency will usually have a great of signal interference and noise, and that's more than likely why they are so inexpensive. These are the systems that will also try to field calls from your neighbors cordless phones, pick up conversations had on cell phones by passing drivers and, potentially even your neighbors' monitoring system. Monitors with higher operating frequencies won't have these annoying problems and they're less difficult to use. The best sound and frequency for a monitor is 2.4 gigahertz.

What else is happening in your home that could interfere with the monitor? Many people are not aware of the fact that the electronic devices in their home (such as their phones and radios) may interfere with the baby monitor. If you choose something on the same frequency, you could mess up more than one of your possessions! When you and your family are searching for the right baby monitor, you can use many methods for making your final choice. You may pick the brand that has the most impressive list of features. It's possible to get helpful advice from those you trust. You can research through consumer reporting agencies. Studying the product reviews on large sites can tell you a lot as well. Another tactic is to go to the store and compare the different products that are available. Just make sure that your decision is considered and thought out. You can't always be in the same room as your baby, so this device has to serve as your eyes and ears during these times! This is one case where you don't want something that's second best!
