How To Detect Possible Symptoms of Autism

Parents of autistic children can tell right away that their child is different, but there are many symptoms of autism. So it takes testing and an expert diagnosis to verify if someone is autistic or has another developmental disability that may have similar symptoms. The symptoms of autism we will be looking at here are some of the more common ones, but there are many others as well, and keep in mind that not everyone displays the same symptoms.

The infant's need and desire for human touch is great, and that is a normal and expected behavior. However, autistic children usually do not want to be touched by anyone including their parents. This is sometimes one of the first symptoms to be noticed, and there is understandable confusion and distress caused to the parents when their child does not want to be held or touched. While autistic children display many different symptoms, the dislike of physical contact is fairly common. There are some therapies that attempt to overcome this symptom by trying to get autistic children accustomed to human touch, but it is still unclear if these methods are effective. It's also well known that autism causes those afflicted to have an unusually high sense of personal space, and they do not want it to be violated.

It can become apparent at an early age, if your child is autistic, that they find it difficult to socialize normally. A generally aloof manner, refusal to make eye contact, and a preference to play alone are symptoms of autism. An autistic child will find it difficult to tell you what he needs or wants and will communicate using gestures more often than words. With children, this can make things very difficult, as autistic children are often teased or bullied if they are in a classroom or other environment with other children. Because of this and their difficulty learning as others do, children with autism are usually placed in special education classes.

The form of autism that doesn't prevent people from functioning in society is called Asperger's syndrome. Considered eccentric, those with Asperger's are able to hold jobs and communicate with others although they may display symptoms of more sever autism such as lack of eye contact and normal facial expressions. People with this type of autism will often have one very passionate interest, which they talk about constantly, and this is often something of a technical or very specialized nature, such as statistics, the weather or sports scores. People with Asperger's Syndrome often excel at certain professions, such as engineering, science, mathematics and many university careers. Symptoms of autism can vary quite a bit from one person to another. The complete range of symptoms do not always include the more common ones, so it's not recommended to generalize or think stereotypically about this disease. The degree of expression with autism will basically allow doctors to suggest a particular method or approach to treatment. There is still quite a bit of disagreement about what causes autism and the best way to treat it.
